Reading Camp!

Reading Camp allows children ages 4-8 to practice early literacy concepts in a fun and engaging environment. This partnership with Precious Hearts daycare and WIPB offers a summer learning opportunity for students in the Whitely community as well as across Delaware county.

Reading Camp is based on the popular PBS kids TV show, Super Why. Through interactive games, songs, and stories, viewers help the show’s characters solve a problem. Along the way, they learn letter sounds, sight words, and early literacy concepts.

At Motivate Our Minds, our primary focus in the past few months has been literacy education and enrichment. We are concerned that many students, including those within the Whitely community, are spending little to no time engaged in reading. This is one way that we can fill in the gap for early childhood age students—by offering a reading camp.

Students in the Reading Camp are learning rhyming words, letters recognition, and beginning sounds as well as learning to recognize high frequency sight words. Students have been introduced to story elements like character, setting, and plot. This is excellent vocabulary development for children as they listen to stories and make up their own. Reading camp gives them an opportunity to learn in a different environment.

In addition to literacy skills, they are practicing hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, following directions, cooperation, and sharing. The lessons are engaging and have lots of repetition, giving campers plenty of opportunities to practice. Technology, games, crafts, and hands-on activities reinforce the early learning literacy skills that are being practiced in a fun and engaging way.
