January 2024 Newsletter

New Year, New Goals

We want to welcome all families, students, staff, and volunteers back to the building after winter break. During the month of January, we have been talking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., winter, and what a S.M.A.R.T goal is. If you don’t know a S.M.A.R.T goal is: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and trackable. Many students set personal and academic goals for themselves this month. Some of the goals were long term while others were for the next few weeks.

Spotlight on: Student Service

We have awesome students here at MOM. In keeping with one of our MOM objectives, exposure and experiences, we have some of our students, along with the staff, working on a project of making blankets for infants and small children, who have come to our country seeking help. We have partnered with a group who purchased 50 blanket kits. This is an amazing and selfless act of parents, teachers, students and volunteers working together as a community.

Staff Spotlight: Carol Baker

Ms. Carol is the longest employed staff member on our team. She loves Motivate Our Minds and has proven her love and devotion over the last 9 1/2 years. She not only administrates the business side of MOM, but she oversees and distributes the lunch and drives one of our vans to pick up students. She also makes sure all the vehicles are fueled up and maintained. We truly are blessed to have Carol Baker here at Motivate Our Minds.

Thank you for your hard work and labor of love!

New Clubs

On January 26th we started off our clubs. These clubs will be running until the middle of March. One new club that we added was Chess Club. The students in this club were so engrossed with learning chess and different techniques. We are so excited to have Mr. Chris Allen (Vice President of MOM board) and Mr. Frank Scott (President of Whitely Community Council) as our chess instructors.

Artemis Engineer Q&A

On January 24th, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students got to listen to an engineer from NASA’s Artemis project on Zoom. Students spent time listening to how Cryogenic Fluid Management. This is the technology used to store the ultra-cold fluids that make up rocket fuel. This technology is important for deep space exploration as it will allow rockets to go deeper in space. Students had questions about how long the Artemis Mission will take, what phase it is in, and how this helps rockets go further in space.

After this, we spent time exploring life in space on the International Space Station.

Donations

We are ALWAYS appreciative of any gift that people give us, whether its time, gifts, or money.

MOM is looking for community volunteers who would be willing to come and spend time with our students.

We are also looking for small items for our store. Our students LOVE play-doh, lip balm, stickers, special journals and fidget toys.

January Birthdays

On January 31st, we celebrated 5 of our students birthdays with chips, cakes, and singing. At the end of the day, those students went home with a little gift.
